"Exploring Banana and Plantain Peel Extracts as Coagulants in the Treatment of Aquaculture Wastewater; Review

Aquaculture is a vital component of the global food supply, but its rapid expansion has led to increased concerns about the environmental impact of aquaculture wastewater. In this context, coagulation-flocculation processes play a crucial role in removing suspended solids and contaminants from aquaculture effluents. This review paper explores an innovative and sustainable approach to wastewater treatment by examining the utilization of banana and plantain peel extracts as coagulants. The literature reviewed reveals a growing interest in natural coagulants derived from agricultural by-products, such as banana and plantain peels, as ecofriendly alternatives to traditional chemical coagulants. Studies in this field have demonstrated the remarkable coagulation capabilities of these natural materials, attributing their effectiveness to the presence of bioactive compounds, notably polyphenols and polysaccharides. We delve into the extraction methods employed to harness the coagulation potential of banana and plantain peels and discuss the factors influencing their performance, including pH, dosage, and wastewater composition. Comparative analyses with conventional coagulants underscore the cost-effectiveness and reduced environmental impact of banana and plantain peel extracts. Furthermore, this paper explores potential applications of these natural coagulants in aquaculture wastewater treatment, highlighting their sustainable contributions to mitigating environmental challenges in the aquaculture industry. We conclude by pointing to promising avenues for further research and the integration of banana and plantain peel coagulants into practical aquaculture wastewater treatment systems. This review underscores the pivotal role of natural coagulants in promoting the sustainability of aquaculture practices, offering a greener and more effective solution to wastewater treatment.

Influence of Bed-nets and Insecticides Application on Distribution of Culicine Mosquitoes in Urban Centre of Lavun Metropolis, Niger State

This study assessed the influence of bed nets and insecticide application on distribution of Culicine mosquito in urban center of Lavun Local Government of Niger State. Mosquito borne disease has resulted for about 627,000 deaths in the world 602,000 in African and 199,689 in Nigeria, according to world malaria report by World Health Organization (2021). Adult mosquitoes were collected indoors using pyrethrum spray catch (PSC). They were identified morphologically into species and categorized according to their physiological status, using standard identification keys. Two Culicines species were recorded, which are Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex pipiens pipiens in Kutigi Metropolis during the study period. Temperature and relative humidity played an important significant role in Culicine species abundance that is, it influenced their number negatively in Kutigi Metropolis (-0.78893 and -0.28089 respectively). Furthermore, Culicine species correlated positively with open, semi close and close eave types, but between close eave were not significant (r = 0.50341, 0.59705 and 0.27974 respectively) during the study period. The study further recommends prevalence of Culicine born disease in the subject population living in the locality and there is a need for more studies on species distribution and abundance of the same species season-wise to see if their distribution will follow the same pattern year-round.

UTILIZATION OF BANANA AND PLANTAIN PEELS AS COAGULANTS FOR AQUACULTURE WASTE WATER TREATMENT

This study was aimed at determining the possibilities of utilizing banana and plantain peels as natural coagulants for aquaculture waste water treatment. Banana and Plantain peels were sourced from Kure Ultra-Modern Market, Minna, Niger State. They were air dried, grinded and coagulants active component extracted using methanol. Jar test were carried out using the two bio coagulants, by addition of 0.1ml, 0.2ml, 0.3ml, 0.4ml, 0.5ml and 0.6ml coagulants doses to aquaculture waste water collected from Alrakees Fish Farm, along Shiroro Road, Minna, Niger State. After the jar test, water samples obtained from the optimum doses, untreated water sample were analyzed for their water quality parameters. SPSS 23 was used for the data analysis of water quality parameters obtained, untreated and treated water samples were compared with control sample using Duncan multiple regression test. The turbidity removal effectiveness investigation carried out on bio coagulants, are and found to be 50% and & 73% for banana and plantain peels respectively. While, on data analysis carried out by Duncan method, it shows that there is statistical significance difference between water quality parameters of control, untreated and treated water samples , with exception of temperature that show no significance difference. Conclusively, banana and plantain peels are effective to be used as natural coagulants in aquaculture waste water treatment. It is recommended that for further studies, both bio coagulants should be blended with inorganic coagulants in order to determine their effectiveness.

EVALUATING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE ON ORANGE – FLESHED SWEET POTATO AND ITS BETA – CAROTENE EFFECT IN BREAD: A STUDY CONDUCTED AMONG LACTATING MOTHERS IN TAMALE METROPOLIS - GHANA

Food-based interventions are becoming important in approaching and addressing micronutrient deficiencies especially in lactating mothers in Ghana. Orange fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is a good source of energy and vitamin A that has the potential of increasing vitamin A status of lactating mothers. This study assessed OFSP awareness, importance of vitamin A among lactating mothers and its contribution to β-carotene in sweet potato-based bread (Vitabutter and Vitatea) as well as estimation of vitamin A nutrient profile of the Vita bread recipes. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data in the Tamale Metropolis among lactating mothers (150). OFSP awareness among the lactating mothers was found to be low (10%). The estimated β-carotene content of the Vita bread recipes, based on earlier Vitasugar bread, would be about 2938 µg for Vitabutter and 2325 µg for Vitatea bread. This level of β-carotene content could meet (18.83-20.40% for Vitabutter and 14.90-16.15% for Vitatea) of the Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin A for lactating mothers, which is 1300 mcg/day. Although Vitabutter and Vitatea bread could be a food-based approach towards increasing dietary intake of vitamin A, awareness activity OFSP needs to be intensified among lactating mothers in Tamale Metropolis.

One of the many human activities that have an impact on urban highways is street vending, particularly for motorists in a country with a developing market economy like Nigeria. The impact of human activity on urban roadways was investigated in this study. The first part of the study evaluates the geographic distribution of street vending activities on urban roads. The second objective compares the relationship between land use interaction and activities related to street vending. The study evaluates the crucial element affecting roadways using roads designated as reservations for potential future road development and was the subject of surveys with a purposefully selected sample of one hundred sixty questionnaires. The study found that the current economic climate has forced many city dwellers into small-scale businesses like street selling, hawking, and beggaring. The desire to push for the use of more than 55% of the right of way (ROW) was influenced by human activity and the regulatory agencies' shortcomings or incapacity to maintain regulations on human activities taking place on urban roadways. The study asserts a significant connection between human activity, such as street vending, building encroachment, and government policy on urban roads. This study offers policymakers, stakeholders, and academics concrete and abstract benefits of street vending activities as a contributor to raising the living of standard of the country.

Faith Formation in the Digital Era: Reconstructing Christian Religious Education for Generation Z Learners

Technological advancement has reshaped the landscape of Christian religious education, especially for Generation Z, who are digital natives accustomed to interactive and multimedia learning environments. This study investigates the reconstruction of Christian faith formation for Generation Z in Batam, Indonesia, addressing both the opportunities and challenges posed by the digital era. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative data from surveys of 150 Generation Z church members with qualitative insights from interviews and case studies involving Christian educators and youth leaders. The study explores how digital media influences spiritual engagement, learning preferences, and theological understanding among young Christians. The findings reveal that Generation Z in Batam prefers online, visual, and participatory faith experiences, primarily through platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and online devotion groups. However, this digital engagement also leads to information overload, spiritual fatigue, and potential doctrinal confusion due to unfiltered online content. The study identifies peer-to-peer discussions in social media as central to faith formation but notes the risks of theological superficiality. Case studies of hybrid church programs demonstrate that combining face-to-face mentorship with digital interaction increases participation and spiritual growth. Based on these findings, the research proposes a reconstructive model of Christian education that includes contextualized digital curricula, critical media literacy training, hybrid community building, and holistic mentorship. This approach aims to cultivate digitally literate, theologically grounded, and spiritually resilient believers who can navigate the complexities of faith in the digital era. The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on adaptive religious education for contemporary contexts.
