Abstract:
The proliferation of illegal dirty sites on the internet has become a pressing concern globally, impacting individuals across various demographics1. However, its effect on the mental state of the youth society, particularly in the context of India, remains underexplored. This review aims to examine the multifaceted impact of exposure to illegal dirty sites on the mental well-being of Indian youth. The study delves into the prevalence of illegal dirty sites in India, considering socio-cultural factors2, technological advancements3, and accessibility to the internet among the youth population. It also investigates the psychological repercussions of exposure to explicit content, including but not limited to feelings of guilt, shame, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, the review explores the role of societal attitudes, family dynamics, and educational institutions in mitigating or exacerbating the effects of illegal dirty sites on the mental health of Indian youth. It considers the potential influence of cultural taboos, conservative ideologies, and the lack of comprehensive sex education in shaping adolescents' perceptions and behaviour towards such content. Moreover, the review evaluates existing legislative frameworks and law enforcement measures aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal dirty sites in India. It assesses the effectiveness of regulatory mechanisms in protecting vulnerable youth from online harm and promoting a safer digital environment. Drawing upon empirical research, theoretical frameworks, and expert opinions, this review synthesizes current knowledge. It identifies gaps in understanding the complex interplay between illegal dirty sites and the mental well-being of Indian youth. It underscores the importance of multidisciplinary approaches, including education, advocacy, policy reforms, and community interventions, to address the challenges posed by online explicit content and safeguard the mental health of the younger generation in India.
