We argue that our bureaucratic way of life, with its focus on hierarchy, narrow specialization and personal conformity, is the basis for increasing personal and world problems that threaten the end of our species. Yet we see a direction for moving toward what we call an evolutionary way of life which promises to enable us to make continuing progress on our problems. That direction includes (1) an understanding of the nature of these two patterns of behavior; (2) movement toward developing an interdisciplinary science of human behavior, and placing it in the hands of the ordinary individual; (3) the spread of what we call an “East-West strategy” that points the individual toward continuing personal development; and (4) moving social structures in a gradational evolutionary direction, based largely on the published work of Fred Polak and Lawrence Busch. We see our ideas as a first step in the direction of such mammoth changes, and we look forward to the further development of these ideas on the basis of new evidence.
