Abstract:

Researchers from various fields have shown interest in three-dimensional printing because of its wide range of applications. The primary aim of incorporating 3D printing technology within the pharmaceutical sector is to develop customized delivery systems tailored to individual patients. This would allow for easy customization of the form, size, and rate of administration of different medications. The most extensively studied aspect of this technology is the drug delivery mechanism, which includes controlled release, polypills, gastrofloating, orodispersibles, and microneedles. Additionally, 3D printing has facilitated the development of pharmaceutical devices such as pharmacy dispensing aids, drug eluting scaffolds, and combinatorial products that serve as drug delivery systems or medical devices. The utilization of 3D printing technology has the capacity to facilitate the creation and manufacturing of adaptable formulations that can be tailored to specific dosages, forms, sizes, and drug release mechanisms. Additionally, this technology enables the combination of multiple drugs within a single formulation. Consequently, the potential benefits of 3D printing extend to patients, pharmacists, and the pharmaceutical industry as a whole. This provides a broad overview of the evolution of 3D printing technology, from its initial stages to the creation of finished products.
